Growing

Growing fruit and vegetables ? by people for people

The fruit and vegetable produce marketed by Landgard Obst & Gemüse GmbH & Co. KG is grown almost exclusively by around 1,400 producers in the region. These market growers cultivate a total area of 7,700 hectares, divided into approximately 3,000 hectares of fruit and about 4,400 hectares of vegetables.

Areas under cultivation are the climatically favourable regions in the Cologne-Bonn area, the Koblenz area growing mainly stone fruit, the area around Düsseldorf, which focuses on vegetable growing and the region around Straelen with vegetables grown outdoors and under glass. In several early growing areas with a climate capable of cultivating vines, particularly in the Rhine valley, outdoor strawberries can be picked as early as mid-May.

Market gardening in the Rhineland is distinguished by the variety of its produce. More than 50 different varieties of vegetables and ten types of fruit flourish here: from ?A? for artichokes ? successfully grown since the summer of 2000 ? to ?Z? for zucchini.

With the aid of new growing techniques such as early and late cultivation, waiting beds and cultivation under cover and under glass the crop season is extended and the quality improved as well.
